• Difference Between Attracting New Team Members vs. Pursuing New Team Members

  • LAW OF MAGNETISM

The universal law of magnetism tells us that who we are is who we attract.  When I first learned of this principle, I decided to do some investigation of my own.  I was building my direct sales team and was starting to catch some momentum.  To my surprise, it was true!!  Most of my team were in a similar age group as I was, many were young moms, like me, we had an effervescence that was undeniable, and were always having so much fun building our businesses.

I jotted things down on my list that I saw in myself and in my team that went beyond the external demographics.  Some of the things on my list were:

    • Creative and Innovative
    • Caring and Coachable
    • Solution Oriented with a Positive Attitude
    • Honest and Transparent
    • Flexible and Responsible

I thought everything was amazing, and then I learned about the law of intentionality.

    LAW OF INTENTIONALITY

I put together a list of things I wanted to enhance in myself so the law of magnetism could work in my life to attract the leaders to my team that I desired.  Some of the new things on the list were:

    • Follow Up and Follow Through
    • Detail Oriented and Loves Agendas and Data Analysis
    • Be More Intentional and Not Fly by The Seat of My Pants

What I discovered over time was that not only did I value the people that had these qualities, but that I started living and leading from this perspective.  And low and behold, once I did, I started attracting them to my team.  When I did this, it provided a more well-rounded team that was like-minded but diverse in skill set.

I also discovered that not only was I attracting amazing, savvy business people to my team, but that I no longer felt like I had to “pursue” individuals to join my team with what felt like persuasion.  I also noticed that I shifted my focus from being all about me and began to focus on how I could serve them and meet their needs.

I created a bridge with my story to something that was resonating within them. I began truly appreciating, with a heart of gratitude the gifts and blessing of other’s personalities and behavior styles, and began slowing down enough to be a concerned listener.

Instead of having to pursue them… they were drawn to me like a magnet.

It was so refreshing to not feel like I had to try to convince someone to listen to how I believed my business opportunity offer would benefit their life, but to have them engaging me in conversation.

How did I make the shift?

    • I shifted my awareness by growing myself and my leadership. I embraced the Law of the Lid that says, the level of your leadership ability is determined by your level of effectiveness.  I realized that if I desired more… I needed to become more.  I also embraced the Law of Process that helped me realize that leadership develops daily, not in a day.
    • I had to look in the mirror and realize that although I was attracting fun, dynamic people to my team, that we had little follow up or follow through, and that as a team, we could be so much more if we had others in our team that possessed the skills that we naturally did not.
    • I got a mentor and coach. My coach helped me move from where I was stuck to where I desired to be by asking me powerful questions and helping me with intentional action steps and accountability.  My mentor helped me grow in the areas that I needed help, that I could not see myself.

    DON’T LIKE WHAT YOU SEE?

If you don’t like what you see on your team, or believe that it could be enhanced, then look in the mirror. Play detective in your life and business as to how you are showing up as a leader.  There may just be something in your magnetic field that is attracting people with a particular behavior to you.

What are some of the additional positive magnets that attract people to you?

    • Attitude – this is the most contagious qualities. People with positive energy naturally stay away from people with negative energy.
    • Background – this is an easy bridge for people to connect with you on if you have things in common.
    • Values – shared values (both positive and negative) are powerful magnets. Either way, the attraction is equally as strong.  Jesus attracted huge followers, and so did Adolf Hitler.  We value those with similar values.
    • Energy – Have you ever had to work with someone with an energy match opposite of yours? It can drive you both bonkers.  Compared to you, what is the energy level of people who are driving you crazy right now?
    • Giftedness – people do not follow mediocre leaders very long. We are all attracted to leaders with talent, excellence and passion.  We all want to follow leaders who are successful in their businesses, players want to follow coaches with great talent, and creative people want to follow people that think outside the box.  Like attracts like.

My mentor, John Maxwell says, “Whatever characteristics you possess is what you’ll likely find in your followers.”

It is just as important that you are attracting people to you vs. having to pursue them, but you want to be mindful of who you are attracting as well.
